Hormones and breast feeding rule the day

Five days after giving birth to my daughter I am still struggling to express my thoughts and feelings about new mommahood.
My uncharacteristic loss of words was initially caused by the morphine hangover that followed my epidural. Today, I am still processing new emotions and routines, and the new person who looks at me with the biggest blue eyes I have ever seen.
And yes, I am already longing for a nap.
Throughout my pregnancy I heard that parenthood would change my life, but I wasn’t truly able to process how radical the change would be until yesterday morning when I started this new week as Mom for the first time.
The obvious changes – the baby accessories that have taken over my condo – are not overwhelming. It’s the emotional changes that continue to take me for a ride. At this point, I could make use of a book on Zen parenthood or perhaps the Tao of parenting.
In the meantime, I’ll just be happy if my hormones finally level out and I can get the hang of breast feeding – both are a lot harder to manage than they are cracked up to be.

Thanks for your comments. I’m still getting the hang of breast feeding and am seeking out some help. It may be natural, but it’s not easy. Thanks for all of the recommendations and support!

Nicole - Sophia is absolutely gorgeous! Oh, how I long to hold her...I cannot believe my son is already eight months old. The knitted hat is just adorable. And look at all that beautiful, dark hair!
I agree with Carlie - bf-ing is so much easier once you get the hang of it. I will share that with all three of mine, it wasn’t until about 21/2 to 3 months that “the hang of it” happened for me! Just keep reading about how to do it. I even called a nearby LLL when I was having some trouble with this third baby and they were sooo nice and helpful.
Also, my dh was SO supportive and non-judgmental and I thank him for that all the time. (Guess that’s why we’re married!).
Oh, and I meant to tell you that “Secrets of the Baby Whisperer” is a book I picked up a month ago when I had some trouble with T-Bone’s sleep schedule. Loved it! Wish it had been around when I had my first baby.

Oh Nicole,
Baby Sophie is so precious. She already looks older than a few days in some of the pictures. Good luck with the breast feeding--you just have to keep at it. Remind yourself, it’s better for Sophia’s immune and digestive system--not to mention it’s easier whip out a tittie at 3 am than to go to the kitchen, mix formula, sanitize a bottle and all that. Plus, formula costs a mint--in addition to the added diaper expense. Just take care to drink plenty of water and stay off the gassy foods.
I wish we could come up to see her. I love the hat and blanky--they look so sweet on her. Try to get some rest--it’s hard the first couple of months--but sleep a little when you get the chance. Keep posting so we can know what’s going on.
