Not a Hollywood birth story
Nicole McMullin
Sep 26, 2007

My birth story has a happy ending - ten fingers, ten toes, bright eyes and a loud cry. The overall birth process, though, was not like a Hollywood story.

I never went into labor. My husband and I didn’t scurry out of the house in the middle of the night and hurry towards the hospital. We didn’t experience traffic delays, forgotten bags or other follies. Instead, we had to decide whether or not Sophia would be born by a cesarean section instead of a vaginal birth after one failed induction attempt and 24 hours in the hospital.

I was a puffball for most of my pregnancy. Overweight to begin with, normal pregnancy weight gain coupled with the amount of water I retained just made me look puffy from head to toe.

But as the weeks went by I went from puffy to at risk for preeclampsia (also called toxemia) and a general concern that I may explode. I gained less than 20 pounds during my pregnancy and it appears it was mostly water weight.

A month prior to my due date the fluid that had permanently settled in my feet and ankles (my husband correctly referred to them as cankles) migrated north and my hands, fingers and face ballooned as well.

For these reasons, each time I saw an obstetrician or midwife (I went to a collaborative practice) there was increased concern. I was told to lay flat as much as possible in the hopes that I could rid my body of some of the fluid. I was also told to keep walking as it would help as well. Essentially, I was supposed to lay flat unless I was walking. Sitting wasn’t on the list.

Meanwhile, all seemed well with the baby although she had yet to drop and my cervix was long and closed. In short, my body was not readying itself for labor.

I knew that one of us would have died in childbirth, had it been 1899 instead of 1999.

Thanks for your comments. I listened to a Podcast called Pregtastic while I was pregnant and women regularly shared their birth stories during the show, a few of which endured unplanned cesareans and other issues. I think it’s amazing how many women have less than perfect tales to tell. Knowing that I am not alone has been a great comfort.

And as for another child and another pregnancy - I can’t even wrap my brain around that idea right now.

Sounds a bit like my first delivery. For my second, my body had a better idea of what to do, and instead of a second C-section, I had a VBAC - which was unexpected and a fantastic experience! If you eventually have another child, I hope you have a similar experience.

Ah, Nicole...the miracle of childbirth is an endless source of wondering, isn’t it?  I was adamant about not having a C-section for my first baby, and had been assured I wouldn’t need one all along, but when my water broke and after many hours the situation was lamentably labeled as “failure to progress,” we had to make the same decision you did.

After my second C-Section (planned)I cried to my dh that maybe I wasn’t meant to have any more babies since, like you, I knew that one of us would have died in childbirth, had it been 1899 instead of 1999.

So here I am, three C-sections later, having ceased to wonder and only enough room in my heart and mind to be thankful for my doctors and specialists, for having been born in the U.S. where all this medical technology is available and...the miracle of life itself.

I am so glad that you are writing about all this.  Your daughter is fortunate to be able to read about her mother’s thoughts one day as she herself is preparing for childbirth.
